Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

Offset printing is best suited for large to medium volumes of high quality prints, economically.

An offset printing unit contains a water pan with water rollers to apply water on to the plate cylinder. The printing unit also consists of an ink tray with ink rollers to apply the ink to the plate cylinder. Ink and water are applied to the image carrier, which transfers the image to the offset cylinder. The offset cylinder is mainly made out of rubber which allows for easy transfer of the image to the substrate. An impression cylinder ensures that the substrate is pressed against the offset cylinder for the ink to be transferred.

This process happens for each individual colour to obtain a full color image. The most basic image consists of 4 colours- Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (black).

Bleed in printing is the area to be trimmed off. Crop marks, which are lines printed in the corners of a publication’s sheet or sheets of paper indicate where the paper should be trimmed. They are used by commercial printers for creating bleeds where an image or color on the page needs to extend all the way to the edge of the paper.
